Data is very important in the corporate world and it brings the necessity of taking backup your data periodically. Let's see how you can create a scheduled script that takes a daily backup of your Google spreadsheet. We do this using Google Apps Script.

To start writing scripts, go to Menu > Tools > Script editor. This will open up the script editor in a new window.

There is a one-liner to create the copy of the spreadsheet as below

   SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet().copy(name)

But this is not what we want, because this copies everything to the new spreadsheet, including code. In many situations, we may not need any code to be copied to our backup spreadsheet. And there will also a rule that we don't need to back up all the sheets. We might be only interested in only a few sheets.
So, the idea is to copy only a list of sheets in the spreadsheet and then move the backup spreadsheet created to a specific folder.

So, in my spreadsheet I only want to copy two sheets, 'Data' and 'Report'. I will create an array as below

   const sheets = ['Data', 'Report']

We also need to name the spreadsheet so that later we can understand which days data is it. The best way is to create a string from the current date.

   const date = now.getDate();
   const month = now.getMonth()+1;
   const year = now.getFullYear();
   const backUpSpreadsheetName = `${year}-${month}-${date}`;

The next logic is where the actual copying takes place. To do that we first create a blank spreadsheet and then we loop through the arrays of sheet names and copy sheets one by one from the master spreadsheet to the newly created backup spreadsheet.

      .copyTo(backupSpreadsheet)

When a created a new spreadsheet `backupSpreadsheet` it will be having a blank sheet with the name 'Sheet1'. We don't need it and can be deleted.

  backupSpreadsheet.deleteSheet(blank);

This newly created spreadsheet `backupSpreadsheet` will be in the same folder where our master spreadsheet is. We don't want that. We have a separate folder in the drive for the backup files and a new backfile need to be moved under it.

Mission accomplished. Next, you create a trigger in your app script and ask to run the backup script at a specified interval.
